New Kia Telluride is a big SUV with good gas mileage!
A few years ago, when gas prices were going through the roof, the demand for SUV’s, particularly the larger variety, started to wane.
With prices now returning to normal, the driving public has rediscovered their love of the SUV and crossover segment, making it clear that they are once again ready to go big.
Kia are ready to meet that demand and are doing so with the largest SUV they have ever brought to market.
The vehicle in question is the 2022 Kia Telluride 8-seater SUV, and while this vehicle is indeed a big one, the MPG numbers may come as a bit of a surprise to those that want a larger vehicle with good fuel efficiency, a demand that seldom goes hand in hand.
Before we get into the details of the fuel consumption figures for the Kia Telluride SUV, we should make it clear that any and all fuel ratings listed here are have been posted by the U.S. EPA, which means that these are certainly figures that can be trusted.
For those of you who like to do a little comparison shopping when looking at a new large SUV, the good news is that the 2022 Kia Telluride more than holds its own when talking about the competition and fuel efficiency ratings.
In fact, it goes a little better than some of the more popular vehicles in the segment, and even when it comes up a little short, it really isn’t by that much.
MPG of Kia Telluride 2022
Model | Engine | HP | Drive | MPG* |
Kia Telluride | 3.8L V6 | 291 | FWD | 20 / 26 / 23 |
Kia Telluride | 3.8L V6 | 291 | AWD | 19 / 24 / 21 |
- MPG (city / highway / combined)
As you can clearly see, going with the FWD version of the 2022 Kia Telluride means getting some better mileage in all regards. While the AWD model is not quite as efficient as the FWD variant, it still delivers numbers that are on a par with what you would expect from a larger model going the all-wheel route.
In this instance, it really does come down to what you want out of your SUV. If you are looking for an everyday vehicle that works for a larger family, you might well be happy with the front-wheel-drive Kia Telluride model.
If, on the other hand, you are seeking some fun and adventure on roads less travelled, the 2022 Kia Telluride AWD will be the way to go.
Kia Telluride mileage compared to rivals
Model | Engine | FWD | AWD |
2022 Kia Telluride | 3.8L V6 | 20 / 26 / 23 | 19 / 24 / 21 |
2019 VW Atlas | 3.6L V6 | 17 / 24 /19 | 17 / 23 / 19 |
2019 Chevy Traverse | 3.6L V6 | 18 / 27 / 21 | 17 / 25 / 20 |
2019 Honda Pilot | 3.5L V6 | 20 / 27 / 23 | 19 / 26 / 22 |
2019 Nissan Pathfinder | 3.5L V6 | 20 / 27 / 23 | 19 / 26 / 22 |
The reality with this segment is that there is not much of a difference between all the models when talking about fuel economy.
The Kia Telluride sits right in the middle of the pack, beating out the likes of the Chevy Traverse and the Volkswagen Atlas, while falling a little short of the Nissan Pathfinder and Honda Pilot.
At the end of the day, though, the decision to buy an SUV comes down to more than just fuel efficiency, and Kia have certainly put together a vehicle that can compete on all fronts!
Not bad for a 3.8L size engine.
Hyundai & Kia have recently developed a brand new 3,5L V6 engine which will most likely find its way under the hood of the Telluride in a year or two. That should further boost the model’s MPG.
I also hope they introduce the plug-in version soon, as this is the latest trend in the SUV category.
