How fuel efficient is the fully-redesigned Kia Soul boxy car?

These are the official 2022 Kia Soul MPG figures for the US-market. The funky little crossover comes available with 2 different 4-cylinder engines and 3-different transmissions.

2022 Kia Soul 2.0L + 6-speed manual MPG

The entry level Soul comes equipped with the base 2.0L 4-cylinder gasoline engine mated to the 6-speed manual gearbox. It achieves 25 mpg city, 31 mpg highway and 27 mpg combined. These figures actually make it the least efficient powertrain combination in the Soul range.

2022 Kia Soul 2.0L + IVT MPG

The same 2.0L 4-cylinder engine can also be mated to the IVT automatic gearbox. In this case, the fuel economy figures increase to 27 mpg city, 33 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined.

The same powertrain combination (2.0L + IVT) and the addition of the ECO dynamics package result in another boost of the Soul mileage. The Soul “ECO” delivers 29 mpg city, 35 mpg highway and 31 mpg combined.

2022 Kia Soul 1.6L turbo + 7-speed DCT MPG

The range-topping Soul is fitted with 201-horsepower 1.6L turbo engine and 7-speed DCT. It is the quickest and most powerful model, but still manages to deliver good fuel economy figures: 27 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 27 mpg combined.

What is IVT?

The new Kia Soul comes available with 3 different transmissions. The entry-level model comes fitted with the 6-speed manual gearbox, while the range-topping turbo model gets the 7-speed dual clutch transmission.

The third option available is the automatic transmission with variable gear ratios, called IVT, which stands for Intelligent Variable Transmission. This is Kia’s in-house developed tranny that is similar to the CVT (continuously variable transmission), but comes with several advantages.

Compared to the traditional CVT, the Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) is quieter, more fuel efficient and delivers smoother and more linear acceleration.

Does the IVT improve Kia Soul fuel economy?

While Kia’s new IVT encompasses many of the traditional advantages of conventional automatic transmissions, it also includes the key benefit of continuously variable transmissions: fuel economy.

The IVT does improve Kia Soul mpg figures. The table above confirms that the Soul equipped with IVT is actually the most fuel efficient model in the range, delivering 29 city, 35 highway and 31 combined mpg.
