Next-generation Kia cee’d getting 2.0L Theta turbo engine from Optima Turbo?

Update 2013: Indeed, the all-new 2013 cee’d is getting a turbo engine! Here are the latest cee’d turbo news!

Next-generation Kia cee’d to get a (274-horsepower?) 2.0L turbo engine, which is currently available in the Optima and Sonata Turbo models.

Watch out Kia fans, the South Korean fastest growing carmaker is preparing an assault on mainstream European hot hatches ( VW Golf GTI, Renault Megane RS and Opel Astra OPC) next year, when the next-generation cee’d hits the streets.

While Kia might also release a Kia Rio turbo hot-hatch sometime next year, the flagship model of the automaker’s upcoming hot-hatch family of cars will definately be the all-new cee’d hatchback, which is currently in the pipe-line, and is scheduled to make its official European premiere in late 2012 or early 2013.

According to Autocar.co.uk, the basis for Kia’s hot hatch is likely to be the next-generation Kia Cee’d 3-door, which would feature a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine. The same four-cylinder engine currently propells the top-of-the-range Kia Sportage Turbo and Optima Turbo, as well as Optima’s twin model, the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Turbo.

The 2.0L Theta II turbo unit, which currently packs impressive 274 horsepower, will likely be retuned to provide somewhere in-between 230-250 horsepower, states Autocar. Along with Kia’s new six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission and sport tuned suspension, the next-generation Kia cee’d “turbo” should provide the driver with a spirited acceleration and joyful ride.

In addition to the new Cee’d hot hatch, Kia is also going to release a convertible.  According to Autocar.co.uk, the convertible will not be based on any of the carmaker’s current compact hatchbacks, but rather on a next-generation Kia Soul, which is expected to hit the market in 2014.

As much as we enjoy hearing the news about the next-generation Kia cee’d turbo, we are also looking forward to the re-incarnation of the Soul’ster – a Kia Soul-based convertible which was displayed at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. [Source: Autocar.co.uk]

They need to stuff that in a KOUP AWD..

  3. With the introduction of the Kia Optima Turbo, there’s only a question of time when the Koup gets a turbo-charged engine! It is now evident that the industry goes towards smaller turbo engines, and Kia officials have already revealed that such engines will be available in most of their cars sooner or later.

As far as I know, Kia will soon intriduce a 1.6L turbo engine, as well as a 1.2L turbocharged engine, which has already been unveiled in Europe (Geneva auto show) and will find its place under the hood of new Kia Rio and other small cars in the automaker’s line up (Soul, Picanto??)

Kia needs a upscale 2 door KOUPE. I am talking Audi S5 or the last Lincoln Mark VIII. They need a BIG door wide body vehicle that can sit
4 adults at least 6’5 (yes I am talking to fit me and my sons). Lets get a sexy VG KOPUE that is meshing of the Koupe and the cee’d witht he length of the Equus. Now we are talking!!!!!!!!

The next logical step for the Forte Koup is probably a 1.6T or a 2.4 GDI. The 1.6T is already introduced by Hyundai/Kia in the Seoul Motor Show. This engine makes 208 hp!

As well the new Theta 2.0L Turbo version for the SOUL SPORT would be great. Or if they can not see thier way clear to do that at least then the FORTE 2.4L for the SPORT and lesser 2.0L versions below that then. But the Turbo would the ideal bump-up for it. Can only imagine what my SOUL SPORT LIMITED EDITION Stick would be like with the turbo or 2.4L in it. Then the $500 big brake kit would be put to good use better.
