Kia 1,0L 3-Cylinder “Kappa” Turbo Engine

Kia reveals four new turbocharged engines at the Geneva motor show, including their brand new 1,0L 3-cylinder T-GDI Kappa engine!

If you stop by Kia’s booth in Geneva, you’ll want to check out the all-new cee’d GT and pro_cee’d GT hot hatchbacks, as well as the carmaker’s latest concept car called Provo.

What you shouldn’t miss either is the special “powertrain” display where Kia is displaying a range of highly-advanced turbocharged engines.

The South Korean carmaker previews 4 new turbo gasoline direct injection engines which are currently under development in Kia’s research and development centre in South Korea.

New Kia turbo engines

  • Kia’s 3-cylinder 1,0L turbo engine delivers 100 and 120 horsepower, respectively. It also achieves up to 15% fuel efficiency improvement over the current non-turbo 4-cylinder engine. It will be available in Kia Picanto, Rio and Ray models.
  • new Kia 1,2 T-GDI “Kappa” 4-cylinder engine, which promises a similar performance to the current 1,6L 4-cylinder unit.
  • Kia’s 1,6L T-GDI engine generates 204-horsepower and 265 Nm of torque. This highly potent turbo engine is available in the new Kia cee’d GT / pro_cee’d GT models, as well as in Kia Forte Turbo.
  • Kia also displays a revised 2,0L Theta II turbo engine, which churns out impressive 245 horsepower. It will be available in the range topping Kia Sportage and Optima models.

The above-mentioned Kia turbo-charged engines boast innovative features such as the dual continuously variable valve timing DCVVT, high pressure direct injection with up to 200 bar through a six-hole injector, an air-guided inter cooler, enhanced oil injection for improved durability and tumble-enhanced intake ports for more efficient combustion.

    245 horsepower from the 2.0L is NOT impressive. It currently produces 260 HP in the Sportage, and 274 HP in the Optima. Must be a typo.
