Set to make its official European premiere at the upcoming Frankfurt auto show in September, the 2010 Kia YN has been caught while undergoing testing at the “Ring” in Germany.
The forthcoming Kia YN will be Kias first true foray into popular mini MPV segment and was designed to rival the Opel Meriva, which has been the best selling model in the segment since its debut.
The 2010 Kia YN is still shrouded in secrecy, but we know it will be built on a slightly modified Soul platform with extended wheelbase. Unlike many other models in the segment, the Kia YN will feature an attractive exterior design and a unique front fascia incorporating Kia’s H-shaped signature grille.
Buyers of the upcoming Kia YN will be able to choose from a variety of small capacity gasoline and diesel engines. Making its premiere in Kia vehicles will be the all-new 1.4L diesel engine, which is currently found only in the Hyundai i20. The 90-hp diesel engine will become a standard offering in all future small and compact Kia cars, including next generation Rio hatch.
In addition to the all-new 1.4L diesel engine, the range of Kia engines will also consist of 1.4L and 1.6L gasoline engines and 1.6L diesel powerplants. All of the engines have been propelling the European cee’d hatchback and are known to offer plenty of power and great fuel consumption ratings.
Mated to the afore-mentioned engine range will be manual transmissions with five or six speeds and a four-speed automatic. In late 2010 or early 2011, Kia will also introduce its own developed dual-clutch automatic transmission and that is rumoured to be applied in the upcoming Kia YN.
Also, the 2010 Kia YN will share the eco-friendly ISG – start-stop system which is currently applied only to cee’d atchback, but it will soon spread to other Kia models. As evident from the spy shot, YN will also feature a huge panoramic glass-roof.
Meanwhile, Hyundai also announced it will develop a similar model to Kias mini MPV. Both of the models will be built at Hyundais European manufacturing plant in Czech Republic and will share core technologies, such as engines and transmissions.
Only if this had the motor to match the dynamics and design…

that looks smaller then a Rondo! how can that be a minivan? I can’t fit three kids, stroller and groceries in that.

THEY ARE NOT CALLED MINIVANS!
That is EXACTLY why America doesn’t get these cars.
They are BIGGER versions of Superminis – they fit between Small Family Cars like VW Golf and Superminis like Ford Fiesta but they have more versatile seating arrangements and more cubby holes and things (so they are much more practical but not especially big)

Humm, its strange my dad was able to tightly fit his 6’4 frame, my mom’s 6’ft frame, and 3 kids in an old school Toyota Corolla. BTW, Old School Toyota Corollas were only a foot longer than a SMART car. The Accent 3 door is alomst 4 ft longer than a SMART car.

Johnathan, I hope this Y/N becomes the US Accent/Rio, becuase the i20 is smaller than the Accent/Rio by 13 inches. According to Motor Trend its almost too small to sell in America. The Y/N is 3 inches shorter than a Honda Fit, but 2 inches taller.

The Next Gen Rondo/Carens will be the C’eed MPV. Though people have erroneously reported that this is the C’eed MPV.
The Release of this fits better with the release of the Rio. The release of the Next Gen Rondo/Carens fits better with the release of the Next Gen C’eed. It would be a waste of money for KIA to have a new C’eed MPV now when the Current Model is going for a full redesign for the 2011 model year

Considering the Rondos ok sales, Hyundai/KIA is looking to bring MPVs 5 door hatchs, and wagons over. I also think since Hyundai got rid of the Minivan, KIA might get rid of the Minivan too. Hyundai North America CEO did say in an Interview to expect small cars like the Accent and Rio to be more hatch based, so Greg is probably right about the Next Gen Rio not being offered as a sedan.
JonathanLGardner, Small Hatches are coming back in style in the States and all of Hyundai/KIAs competetition sells Hatches here. The Rio Hatch’s wagon shape is not like the true Hatches starting to be sold here.
Honda Fit/Jazz, Nissan Versa(Renault Cilo) is forcing the Trend on the rest of the car markers here. Even Toyota sells the Yaris 5 Door Hatch in the US now.

Nice to see Americans catching up with the rest of the world…now they just need to start buying Diesel cars and stop fitting mid-size family sedans with ancient 3.0 litre Petrol engines and they’ll be pretty much there =D

like all car makers,going small….i would rather be in that “town&country”when that 18 wheeler coming up my back….these are only good in them small towns,not our super highways going 70mph…..those 4 little kids you have, where do they sit……lets get real people …..

The USA is the land of the oversized everything. We have huge-ass cars, larger portions at McDonalds, and massive 3-4 Bedroom homes. I have seen a Sportage after a speedway crash with a big-rig, I sure as hell don’t want to see any Rio sized vehicle in that situation. The person in the Sportage is lucky to even be alive.

Both Markets will be more hatches, and more uplevel equippment and trim. I heard 2011 will be the year when the Accent does for Hyundai what the Genesis did in 2009 for the US Market, so a whale of a Rio must be on the way too.

I highly doubt the Rondo is going anywhere as it Kia’s best seller in Canada some months and is doing better than the Mazda5 in the US. The next gen will probably do even better as it somewhat of a test for our market.
I hope no ones reporting what some Kia salesman is saying as fact cause they know nothing more than the average Joe until the weeks up to release.
