Kia are very quickly building a solid stable of eco-friendly vehicles, with the newest model in the line-up being the Kia Optima Sportswagon plug-in hybrid car (PHEV).
It’s the perfect blend of the versatility of the traditional Optima “wagon” combined with the highly efficient powertain found on the Optima PHEV sedan.
This set-up allows the vehicle to go 60 kilometers in all-electric mode before switching to the 2.0L GDI engine.
You also get a whopping 440 liters of cargo space, which is 133 liters more than the sedan variant.
There is a lot to learn about this new Kia plug-in hybrid vehicle, which is why we are taking time to answer some of the more commonly asked questions.

- When can we expect to see the Optima Sportswagon PHEV on sale in Europe, North America?
The Optima Sportswagon PHEV was officially unveiled last month at the Geneva Motor Show. At that time, Kia announced that the vehicle would hit the European market in Q3 of 2017.
Unfortunately, they also announced that it would be a European model only, which means drivers in the US and Canada will not be able to get their hands on it.
- What range can we get in all-electric mode?
The technology used in the plug-in version of the Optima wagon means that it will be able to ride in all-electric mode for periods of time. You’ll find an 11.26 kWh batery pack mated to a 50 kW electric motor, which allows for a driving range of around 60 km, or roughly 38 miles, with a top speed of as much as 120 km/h.
- What are the fuel economy ratings?
While the final numbers have yet to be released by Kia, we do know what their targets are. They are looking at carbon dioxide emissions of 34 g/km, and fuel economy of 1.5-liters per 100 km. We will post the actual figures when they are released.
- What is the cargo capacity of the new Kia Optima Sportswagon PHEV?
You certainly get a ton of cago space with this Optima model, as it delivers a cavernous 440 liters with the seats in the upright position. Fold the rear seats flat and that space expands to 1,574 liters.
There is the ability to get creative with the use of space, thanks to the 40/20/40 rear seat split, with everything controlled via levers just inside the boot entrance.
The battery pack is placed beneath the Optima boot floor, which means that the cagro space is not really negatively affected.
- Does Kia use regenerative braking system in the Optima PHEV?
Yes, the regenerative braking system is in place, which will allow the vehicle to store kinetic energy while it is braking or coasting.
- Tell us about the Optima Sportswagon PHEV warranty?
The vehicle comes with a 7-year, 100,000-mile warranty, in which the battery pack is included.
- Where is it built?
The new Kia Optima Sportswagon PHEV will be built at the Hwasung manufacturing plant in Korea, and will be made solely for the European and Korean markets.
How much does the car weigh? It’s a pity it won’t be brought to Canada. Hatchbacks and wagons do well here vs the US.

I am so disappointed that this car won’t come to the U.S. We have a huge dog, and he just doesn’t fit in our Kia Soul EV or into the Kia Niro plug-in hybrid — at least not when the rear seat is used. Other people have a need for space because of a bicycle, other sports equipment, or a stroller.
Please don’t tell me that there is no market for the Optima Plug-in Hybrid in the U.S. Look how well the Toyota Prius V is selling! Many people would love to “go green” and are frustrated with the small trunks of their big SUVs.
